Veolia Energia Polska, Veolia Energia Łódź, the City of Łódź, and Danish geothermal leader Innargi have signed a letter of intent to explore and implement geothermal energy solutions in Łódź. This collaboration seeks to integrate geothermal resources into the Łódź district heating system, thereby advancing the city’s green energy transition, boosting energy self-reliance, and significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Press Release, Łódź, Poland — October 30, 2024
The initiative, designed as a long-term partnership, aims to deliver up to 200 MW of renewable geothermal energy to Łódź, supporting the city’s shift towards sustainable energy in alignment with Veolia’s GreenUp strategy.
Innovative Model to Overcome Geothermal Adoption Barriers
Europe’s geothermal potential remains largely underutilized, primarily due to high investment costs and geological challenges. Innargi’s novel “geothermal-as-a-service” model addresses these hurdles by assuming upfront costs for geological surveys, infrastructure development, and resource management, thereby easing the financial and operational demands on Veolia. Currently leading Europe’s largest geothermal plant project in Denmark, Innargi brings expertise and innovation that could transform district heating networks in Poland and beyond.
Milestone Towards an Energy-Independent Łódź
The letter of intent was signed at the Łódź Geothermal Conference, marking a step forward in realizing a sustainable heating network. This initiative is set to strengthen the city’s resilience against energy market fluctuations and supply clean, consistent heating for residents.
“Our goal is to provide residents with clean, stable heat that is resilient to the volatility of energy markets. Veolia continuously strives to introduce green solutions and the geothermal project is a proof of our commitment to an efficient energy transition and aligns very well with our global GreenUp strategy. Geothermal is another project we want to carry out with the City of Łódź in the area of district heating and the environmental challenges facing both the energy industry and local governments.”
