The companies aim to distribute heat to the greater Manchester area from Peel Energy’s planned 20 MW Barton biomass combined heat and power (CHP) project (pictured, artist’s rendition), which received planning permission in 2014.
The £750 million ($1082 million) plant is planned to run on 90% recycled wood, and is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2019.
The plant will be designed to have an operational life of at least 25 years, and will provide enough power to meet the needs of up to 37,000 homes, Peel Energy said.
Originally planned as a power-only biomass incineration plant, the Barton facility was reconceived in 2015 as a CHP plant.
