Solar energy will prevent ICEHOTEL from melting

Date: 14/09/2016

ICEHOTEL – the world’s first hotel made of snow and ice was built in 1989 and has been recreated each winter inside the Arctic Circle. The enterprise is now being complemented by a permanent year round hotel.

Twenty suites, an ice bar and a shopping mall are among the facilities at the new ICEHOTEL, which will be a permanent 2,000 m² structure  complementing the ice hotel that is built each year in the village of Jukkasjärvi 200 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle.

A large chiller system powered by solar energy will keep the hotel rooms well chilled, and thanks to the long daylight hours of the Arctic Circle from May to September, the ICEHOTEL can stay open even in summer in a sustainable way.

Opens in November
COWI has been commissioned by ICEHOTEL in several disciplines and will be responsible for building and project management, construction and land, water and power.

“We wanted help with building management and certain construction work. COWI’s local presence was a key factor in our choice of partner,” Entrepreneur and ICEHOTEL founder Yngve Bergqvist says.

The new building will sit alongside the current ice hotel and construction work started in June 2016.

The new building will be officially opened on 4 November 2016.
