Climate defeat in the EU – the district heating industry’s employment and exports are in danger

On April 16 the European Parliament voted against Connie Hedegaard´s backloading proposal. Lars Hummelmose, Managing Director, Fjernvarmeindustrien DBDH, says that “if no policy measures to help re-establish the ETS allowances are implemented quickly; it will mean a loss worth billions in exports of Danish energy technologies and also the loss of thousands of Danish jobs.”

The Danish district heating industry has recently launched a report which shows that technology companies as well as consulting companies in the area of district heating expected exports to the EU to increase by more than 1 billion DKK and thus reach almost 3 billion DKK. What is even worse for the Danish suppliers to district heating plants in Denmark is the fact that the green transition in Denmark is also in danger. The industry had expected an increase in investments of over 4 billion DKK annually for the green conversion of the Danish district heating sector. Thus, there is a risk that Denmark will lose 2,000 green jobs in the Danish district heating sector, unless the politicians initiate other steps that can replace the death of the ETS allowances.
