Burnaby Hosts Insightful Follow-Up to Clean Energy Summit

The City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Board of Trade recently hosted a highly anticipated follow-up to the successful Burnaby Clean Energy Summit.

This event delved into the future of district energy in Burnaby, with discussions inspired by global best practices. A distinguished panel of experts shared insights on the upcoming Burnaby District Energy Utility, highlighting business opportunities, lessons from established markets, and the importance of socially sustainable business models for project success.

With over 75 guests in attendance, the event opened with a warm welcome from Burnaby’s Mayor, Mike Hurley. The packed hall created an ideal atmosphere for dialogue, fostering connections among energy sector leaders, academic experts, and city officials.

The discussion was skillfully moderated by Hanne Kortegaard Støchkel, Project Development Manager at the Danish Board of District Heating (DBDH). Hanne brings extensive experience in international district energy innovation and knowledge-sharing, overseeing projects in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Poland, Canada, France, and Ukraine.

The panel featured an esteemed group of speakers:

Dr. Kristina Lygnerud, Senior Expert at the Swedish Environment Research Institute (IVL) and Adjunct Professor at Lund University, who brings expertise in energy-efficient systems and intrapreneurship in district energy.

Paul Holt, Vice President of Engineering & Operations at Corix Energy, recognized for leading a transformative low-carbon energy transition at Simon Fraser University and the UniverCity neighborhood.

James Lota, General Manager of Lands and Facilities at the City of Burnaby, with a strong background in engineering, business administration, and public policy.

Johanna Ayrault, Researcher at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, specializing in the collaborative governance of sustainable district heating systems.

Emily Doan, Senior Policy Analyst at Natural Resources Canada, who focuses on energy research and development, as well as policy modeling for greenhouse gas reduction in British Columbia.

The event underscored the collaborative efforts needed to advance district energy systems, offering attendees valuable networking opportunities and actionable insights to implement in their own communities. Burnaby continues to set a precedent for sustainable urban energy solutions, guided by the expertise of local and international stakeholders.
