From Ground to Grid: Laying the Foundation
The editorial highlights that there is one and only one way to heat urban areas and therefore focuses on: Get the Pipes in the Ground Now! Talks are always about the heat source, not the pipes – “We build a 30MW heat pump”. This Hot|Cool underscores the urgency of laying the foundation (the pipes!) for district heating.
You’ll find a range of solutions and real-world examples, whether for establishing new district heating companies and focusing on selling heat as soon as possible or upgrading existing networks through new innovative technologies.
Enjoy the read!
The Editor Invites Everyone to a Battle on Heat Sources
Instead of battling with cars as in the good old days, the editor created a new card game now with options for heating urban areas! Let’s have a battle between the many different “solutions”. It could be hydrogen, biogas, individual heat pumps, direct electric heating, and natural gas. As with the car game, there is always one that stands out. The editor has that winner card – the district heating card. Try to win!
The game is on!
Volunteer-led District Heating Company Brings Sustainable Warmth to 1,000 Buildings
The recipe is simple: 1,000 households, a few enthusiastic volunteers and a local authority willing to support. The result is the conversion of a small town from individual natural gas and oil to renewable district heating. In the town of Bjæverskov, just outside Copenhagen, a new district heating (DH) company has been established. Within 3 years, it moved from idea to the first pipes in the ground – and the first kWh of heat will be delivered to the first customers in mid-January 2025. Fast, Simple and Sustainable Renewal of Pipes
Standing at a large intersection in your city thinking about how to renew 200 meters of large district heating pipes—buses, pedestrians, logistics, dirt all over, interruption to gas, water… simply a headache. Pipe relining represents a significant advancement that combines cost savings, minimal disruption, and environmental benefits—and it can be your painkiller. It is quite surprising how much can be saved!
Find out how pipe relining can transform your network here.
Podcast: Collaboration is Bringing District Heating to Burnaby in Metro Vancouver
A partnership between the City of Burnaby and Metro Vancouver is driving the development of district heating in the area. The initiative will leverage excess heat from a Waste-to-Energy plant to reduce emissions and offer space heating at competitive prices. Dive into the highlights and discover why stakeholders and investors show strong interest in the project. Learn all the details and listen along here.
Drinking Water supplies 6.5MW Heat Pump
A completely new heat pump connected to the drinking water system is a small but significant step towards becoming carbon neutral for Frederiksberg Municipality. The heat pump is designed to cope with the large fluctuations in drinking water consumption. The COP is high – up towards 3.9.
Read on to explore how this project fits into the broader transition to sustainable urban heating.
