The energy infrastructure of the future puts high demands on the underlying IT architecture in the energy companies. The IT architecture must enable unhampered data exchange across older technologies, cloud services, meters, sensors, OT/IT systems etc. The goal is a Smart Grid that transforms raw data into valuable knowledge on how we can reduce our resource consumption as a society.

District heating utilities are facing new challenges and opportunities. With networks becoming more and more complex, goals to reach the CO2 neutrality and optimize energy efficiency, are high on their agenda. Therefore, it is crucial to know the trends and new available solutions that connect the network as a whole – from plants and distribution to buildings and homes.
The demand to move towards a circular economy is here, and the demand will increase. Making sure that materials are recyclable at the end of a lifetime and that we can produce new products from recycled materials are challenges that has to be solved. We take a closer look at the development of recycled materials and how they can be used in pre-insulated pipes for sustainable DH.
HEAT 4.0 – Digital Supported Smart District Heating
April 7 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
A webinar about new results from the ambitious HEATman project – “revolutionary progress towards software integration and communication.”
No doubt, new digital technologies can make the whole energy system smarter and more efficient, by making active use of data and fully optimize the district heating system, network operations, and storage. The result will be lower costs and more sustainable heat production for the consumers.
With some of the leading companies within the district heating sector, the project HEAT 4.0, supported by the Innovations Fund Denmark, demonstrates first revolutionary progress towards software integration through data sharing. Heat 4.0 is an open, integrated digital platform for district heating utilities collecting extensive, diverse data in a central cloud. It enables data to be utilised for various holistic decisions about DH production, storage, and delivery – these are temperature optimization, peak shaving, leakage detection and others.
The Heat 4.0 consortium consists of 15 companies representing tech companies, software developers, component suppliers, research institutes and universities, district heating utilities, and the Danish District Heating Association. NIRAS as a consultancy engineer, is the leader of the project.
The speakers of the webinar shows some of the current results of their work.

VIP Webinar – District Heating the World
District heating (DH) is not a won battle…. yet! All over Europe, a battle to improve framework conditions for DH solutions is on. DH is an important part of an integrated, future proof energy system – some would say it’s the backbone, that can play a vital role in decarbonizing our common energy solutions both for heating, electricity, and transport.
In this webinar, we invited top managers from different companies and organizations, who shared their thoughts on how to make district heating a winner all over the world.
Distinguished speakers:
• Volker Kinzeln, Geschäftsführer, KEA , Baden-Württemberg GmbH
• Anton Koller, Divisional President District Energy, Danfoss
• Kim Christensen, President & CEO, Logstor
• Steen Schelle Jensen, Head of Business Development – Heat/Cooling, Kamstrup
The moderator inspiring and engaging the speaker’s discussion is Birger Lauersen, Manager International Affairs, Danish District Heating Association, and President, Euroheat & Power.

District heating in Germany – opportunities in Hessen
This webinar offered an overview of new developments with a particular insight into plans and appetite for new district energy solutions in the state of Hessen – which is new to many Danish companies, but promising and interesting, nevertheless.
Investment – Expansion – Modernization
The district heating sector in Germany is investing in further expansion and modernization through engaged cities and utilities supplemented by earmarked funds from both federal and regional levels. The district heating has found its place as an energy efficient heat source supporting Germany’s target of climate neutrality by 2050.
Denmark is Engaged
Denmark is well connected to the sector through long-standing collaboration at industry level accompanied by dialogue between energy authorities to further strengthening the expansion of district heating in Germany. The Trade Council, the Consulate General in Hamburg, DI Energy, DBDH and the Danish Energy Agency collaborate to build on the promising business potential within district heating in Germany, enabling Danish industry to engage further.
Key Stakeholders Share Insights
This webinar looked at plans and opportunities in the state of Hessen, which is new to many Danish companies, but promising and interesting, nevertheless. This webinar will focus on Hessen’s appetite for new district energy solutions. Dr. Dietrich Schmidt, Department of Power and Heat Systems at Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel will give an introduction to the market potential in Hessen and an insight into the trends that affect the market in tandem with the German Wärmewende. Regional President Ole Møller Jensen will present Danfoss’ experiences from many years in Germany – and in particular in Hessen which they know particularly well from having their production site there. Finally, a utility from Hessen presented their plans to expand the district heating business in a more innovative and sustainable direction.

Exporting DH technologies to Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey
The Trade council sector experts have politically and economically mapped the district energy market opportunities in four markets. They have identified very concrete business and export opportunities for Danish companies in current and upcoming district energy projects. We believe that the Danish district energy success story can be a best-case example to emerging district energy markets like these. And what we want is to match the business opportunities in these markets with Danish district energy companies.
Learn about the attractive business opportunities in the four countries from the local district energy experts who show you how to tap into these. The report points to specific projects that Danish companies may target including the key stakeholders to approach. Since district energy is an emerging market in the Region, there is a unique opportunity for first-mover advantages for the Danish companies. We provide a platform where Danish companies may educate the stakeholders and decision-makers in the mentioned markets and exploit the business opportunities deriving from this.

Danfoss End-to-End District Energy solution: District Energy as a key technology for decarbonisation of modern Cities
Today, 70 percent of all carbon emissions come from Cities and half of that is generated by heating and cooling. If we are to keep global warming below 1.5°C, we must make a change and decarbonize our Cities. Fast! By exploiting the potential of district energy to heat and cool our buildings, 2050 goals are realistic and achievable. Modern district energy networks can be efficient, greener, and more intelligent that ever. But with new renewable and waste heat sources, accompanied by transition to low-temperature networks, these systems are getting more and more complex. Digitalization is a tool, allowing us to efficiently handle this complexity.
In Danfoss, we have developed an End-to-End solution (from components to optimization solutions) enabling operators to efficiently design and operate modern District Energy networks.
Presenters:
• Milan Jungic, Senior Product Manager, Danfoss

The right choice of pre-insulated pipe systems
To make the right choice of pre-insulated pipe systems is a challenging task. Challenging because you have to include more important angles in your evaluation: Optimize the hydraulic design so you are sure that you cover the future needs and, at any time, can deliver the needed heat for the consumers, but at the same time you do not oversize the pipes because that will lead to too high heat loss cost.
• Already at this time think about asset management so that you chose products, systems and installation methods where you secure that you will have a long lifetime without any failures that will lead to higher costs and disruption of the supply.
• Secure that you will have the lowest possible Total Cost of Ownership, which includes parameters like investment cost, heat loss cost and other operational costs
All these parameters have to be integrated in your choice of pre-insulated pipe systems and you have to calculate different scenarios with different assumptions before you can make your final choice. Programme
Presenters:
• Thomas Østergaard, Market Director, COWI
• Peter Jorsal, Product and Academy Manager, LOGSTOR
• Chris Hill, Managing Director, LOGSTOR UK
