PRESS RELEASE | Aalborg CSP A/S and Alfa Laval AB have entered into a joint venture agreement, where Alfa Laval becomes a co-owner of Aalborg CSP’s header-coil heat exchanger business unit. The business unit deals with designing and developing high-temperature heat exchangers for energy storage for electricity and industrial high-temperature steam. The strategic partnership aims to collaborate in meeting the future demand for specialized heat exchangers, including those for energy storage systems using molten salt. The joint venture partnership will operate under “Alfa Laval Aalborg Header-coil A/S.”

The collaboration aims to meet the increasing global demand for reliable heat exchangers and salt systems for future energy storage solutions, enhancing expertise, product development, and application knowledge within the header-coil heat exchanger technology.

The agreement also aims to promote the development of steam generation systems, heat exchangers for molten salt applications, Power-to-X salt systems, Carnot batteries for thermoelectric storage, and power blocks for the next generation of long-duration energy storage systems. All of this is intended to achieve a 100% renewable energy system in the future.

Jo Vanhoren, President of Alfa Laval’s Welded heat exchangers business unit, states, “The energy landscape is changing, placing much greater demands on reliable and efficient heat transfer solutions. Similarly, energy storage is becoming increasingly important as the proportion of renewable energy increases, and grid stability must be ensured.

Alfa Laval has a wide range of heat exchanger solutions available, and by collaborating with Aalborg CSP, we can expand our offerings in the field of molten salt even further. Aalborg CSP’s excellent application expertise and the unique reliability of the molten salt heat exchangers make them a perfect match for Alfa Laval.”

Aalborg CSP’s header-coil heat exchangers are highly reliable, utilizing a unique leak-free design. The design can withstand the cyclic load patterns characteristic of CSP (concentrated solar power) and energy storage plants.

“Alfa Laval and Aalborg CSP will collaborate on developing heat exchangers for future renewable energy systems, where long-duration energy storage is crucial for collecting, storing, and integrating renewable energy sources, thereby achieving net-zero emissions.

By partnering with Alfa Laval, we have found the ideal partner for further scaling our business, especially for meeting the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions with molten salt,” emphasizes Svante Bundgaard, CEO of Aalborg CSP.

Aalborg CSP’s ambition is to change how energy is produced and managed by creating competitive renewable energy solutions. This joint venture partnership will accelerate the company’s efforts to develop and deliver green technologies and integrated energy solutions, thereby reducing energy costs for industries and power plants worldwide and contributing to a positive energy sector transformation.
