Danfoss, a global leader in energy-efficient solutions, is willing to help China in its transition to a greener economy, Kjeld Stark, president of Danfoss China, said in a recent interview with China.org.cn on the sidelines of the 2015 Eco Forum Global Annual Conference in Guiyang, the capital of southwestern China’s Guizhou Province.
Stark said that there will be new opportunities for multinational corporations like Danfoss in China’s economic transformation, as they have much to offer in the area of green technology to contribute to more sustainable development.
“China focuses on quality development,” said Stark, noting that more Chinese cities need to modernize their district energy systems.
Modern district cooling or heating makes full use of surplus energy from combined power plants, and is compatible with multiple local renewable and future energies.
Chinese cities can become more livable by scaling up energy efficiency and renewable energy, Stark said.
“We should not only talk about renewable energy, we should also talk about energy efficiency, because energy efficiency has a much faster payback time than renewable energy.”
Energy efficiency is one of the bottlenecks for China’s sustainable development. Take electric power plants for example. The energy efficiency rate of many Chinese electric power plants is less than 50 percent, which means about 50 percent of the power produced is wasted. However, the deployment of district energy systems will help raise the energy efficiency rate to 90 percent.
Stark stressed the importance of public private partnerships (PPP) in developing district energy systems.
He said, “Building district energy is a multi-stakeholder project. In order to create a good solution for society, the government should do its part, and enterprises should also do their part.”
The Denmark-based green-tech multinational has implemented a district heating system in Anshan, a city in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province, by using the surplus heat of the local AnGang Steel.
The project network benefits the 1.8 million urban residents by improving their quality of living and urban air quality. It helps reduce 240,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.
It has been included in the 45 champion cities for district energy in the world by UNEP and UNHABITAT.
More Chinese cities and areas, including Changchun in Jilin Province and the Niujie Community of Beijing, are now engaged in Danfoss’ district energy programs.
Danfoss has done a lot to help its hometown Sonderborg to build itself into a carbon-neutral city in Denmark by 2029 by halving its current energy consumption with the use of local renewables.
