Biomass market can be doubled by 2020

Date: 4 September 2013

The global market for biomass will continue to grow. That is the message from analyst firm Navigant in a new analysis which predicts that globally there will be at least 82 gigawatts of biomass capacity such as wood and straw-fired power plants connected to the grid in 2020, according to Energy Watch.

Pension Denmark and Burmeister Wain Scandinavian Contractors plan to invest in a biomass-fired power plant in the UK with a capacity of 40 megawatts, covering the annual consumption of 70,000 households.

Biomass power plants currently supply three percent of the global electricity needs, but biomass is in many ways dependent on subsidies – or exemption of – taxes, according to Navigant.
