Denmark has entered into close cooperation with Mexico on energy policy. The agreement was signed during the visit of Minister for Climate and Energy, Lykke Friis, to Mexico.
"Denmark and Mexico have already begun a close cooperation on the international climate policy. Denmark is President of the UN climate negotiations until November when we hand over the responsibility to the Mexicans. It is therefore obvious that we now go further and initiate a very specific cooperation especially on energy efficiency, "says Minister for Climate and Energy, Lykke Friis .
Mexico is the world´s seventh largest oil producer and one of the major players in the international energy market. The agreement between Mexico and Denmark contains four specific points where the two countries will now enter into closer cooperation:
• Electricity and renewable energy
• Energy efficiency
• Oil and gas
• Biofuels
The agreement - which commit the countries to increase exchange of knowledge and arrange a series of conferences focusing on energy cooperation - were from the Mexican side signed by Minister for Energy, Georgina Kessel, and from the Danish side of the Minister for Climate and Energy, Lykke Friis .
"At the recent energy summit in Washington energy effeciency was ranked as the sleeping giant of energy policy. Danish companies are internationally in front, and therefore Denmark is a particularly interesting partner for Mexico, which have not yet harvested low hanging fruits - to the benefit of both bottom line and climate, "says Lykke Friis.
During her visit in Mexico, Lykke Friis also discussed the prospects for UN climate talks with Mexican Environment Minister Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada in view of COP 16 in Cancun.
Lykke Friis, says: "My visit in Mexico coincided with the fact that it finally became clear that the U.S. does not succeed with the legislation needed for the country in order to move on in COP16 Cancun. Despite the bad news the Mexicans - and Danes - are still keen to obtain substantial progress on the climate in Cancun.
